UhuruPads are Tanzania’s only 100% biodegradable and compostable sanitary pad. Made in Arusha, Tanzania by a team of women, the pads - along with undergarments and our health and hygiene curriculum - are provided at no cost to girls attending school. We are grateful to Aakar Innovations of Mumbai, India - which has provided the amazing technology behind our pads.
In Swahili, "Uhuru" means "Freedom." We believe every girl and every woman has the right to live in dignity and freedom. It's that simple.

HOW WE STARTED. The technology and system behind UhuruPads was developed by Aakar Innovations of Mumbai, India. In 2017, UhuruPads was launched in Tanzania using the Aakar system. A US social entrepreneur, Laura Chauvin, worked with 8-time NBA Basketball All-Star, Dwight Howard, to provide the start-up funds to support the efforts of a group of local women. Currently a team of 12 women comprise the Uhuru Kit Ltd. team, making over thousands of eco-friendly UhuruPads each day for donation to girls so they can attend school during with confidence during menstruation. All aspects of the product are compostable, providing support for girls without creating environmental challenges.
